Roofs endure extreme weather and sunlight, which can damage the material of which they’re made. While you can switch over to more expensive options, roofers have found a more affordable way to protect your roof. This form of protection comes in the form of four different roof coatings, each of which offers your home various levels of resistance to the elements. Here are the details of each one.

4 Common Roof Coatings

1. Acrylic

Made of acrylic polymer, this coating is available in both water and solvent-based formulas. While quality varies by manufacturer, this coating can resist rust. It also is good for  reflecting weather and ultraviolet (UV) rays. It’s the most common option available on the market today, being the most affordable.

2. Asphalt

Also known as cutback coating, this is commonly used for modified bitumen and built-up roofs. It’s melted from solid asphalt to a liquid solvent, which makes it easier to apply. As a roofing contractor, we can provide you with this coating in black or reflective aluminum. Both are good at handling weather, but the aluminum variant is better for reflecting UV rays.

3. Silicone

Silicone coatings are more expensive compared to the other options. However, they are superior in terms of waterproofing properties. The material is also biodegradable, so it’s a greener choice. This coat can be applied with a roller or spray gun, and can last for over two decades even with pooling water, making it a cost-effective choice.

4. Polyurethane

Polyurethane coatings are solvent-based, which means they must be mixed and primed before application. While these coats are not particularly good at UV reflection, they do have strong impact resistance and abrasion ratings. A roofing company uses this because the coating can withstand hail damage without issue.
